Throughout the 1990s, Blue Man Group founders, Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton, and Chris Wink, declined numerous opportunities to record an album and opted instead to expand their arsenal of new
musical inventions.
In 1997, Blue Man Group were able to secure a warehouse space big enough to accommodate all of their large-scale industrial gadgetry.
A year later, after installing a recording studio, Blue Man Group begin to the explore the medium of recorded sound.
Although AUDIO does contain recognizable elements from Blue Man Group's stage show, as a body of music it remains distinct from the show's score. The music within the theatrical production is shaped largely by the action that takes place on stage. While recording AUDIO, Blue Man Group felt free to create a unique listening experience that was unburdened by the theatrical obligations of moving the plot of a live stage show forward.
Blue Man Group's debut album, AUDIO was released in December
1999 and went on to receive a Grammy nomination in the Best Pop
Instrumental category and was certified Gold by the Recording
Industry Association of America.
This highly original body of music has infiltrated pop culture in many ways. Music from AUDIO can be heard on various news, sporting and entertainment pieces including movie trailers and video games.
