ABOUT BLUE MAN GROUP
-
What is Blue Man Group?
Blue Man Group is a creative organization dedicated to creating excitement-generating experiences for our audience and ourselves.
-
How did Blue Man Group evolve?
The show evolved out of salon style meetings in the late 80s with three long time friends Chris Wink, Phil Stanton and Matt Goldman. They began making public appearances as Blue Man Group on the streets of New York City as well as in performance art spaces of the East Village. Some of those pieces, as well as others developed with musical collaborators Larry Heinemann, Ian Pai and video designer Caryl Glaab, were used to create a show at La Mama, ETC. (the famous East Village performance space) in 1990. This led to opening the show at the Astor Place Theatre in the fall of 1991. The Boston show opened in the fall of 1995, Chicago in 1997, and Live at Luxor in Las Vegas in March of 2000. The Complex Rock Tour launched May 2003. In May 2004, Blue Man Group opened their first international production in Berlin.
-
How many Blue Men are there?
There are close to 60 Blue Men working within the company and rotating through the shows right now.
-
How many times has Blue Man Group appeared on "The Tonight Show" and are copies of "The Tonight Show" appearances available to the public?
March 31, 2004 marked Blue Man Group’s 14th appearance on "The Tonight Show" since 1992. At this time, we are unable to make copies of those appearances for everyone who requests them. Make sure to check the News section on blueman.com from time to time to find out when our next scheduled television appearance will be; that way you can set your VCR.
-
Can I have an autographed picture mailed to me?
After the show, the Blue Men are in the lobby to meet and greet the audience. At that time, it is possible to get a Blue Man autograph. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to send out autographed photos.

-
Where are Blue Man Group’s theatrical productions? How long will they be running?
Blue Man Group’s long running theatrical productions are performed in New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas and now Berlin. We will continue to perform in these cities for as long as people continue to enjoy the show. A big part of our longevity is due to the many people who return to see BMG again and again to bring along friends who have yet to see the show.
-
Are the shows different in each city?
The theatrical shows in New York, Boston and Chicago all share a similar script but vary in the size of the theatres in which they are housed. In March 2004, new material was added to the New York, Boston and Chicago productions. Las Vegas ( Live at Luxor ) is our largest theatrical venue to date in the United States and contains many of the pieces from the other domestic shows as well as new work that was created specifically for that venue. The Berlin production, which opened on May 9, 2004, is the largest Blue Man Group venue to date is also a mixture of signature Blue Man Group pieces and new material created specifically for Berlin.
The Complex Rock Tour was an entirely different Blue Man production, created as a rock concert experience.
-
How often do the theatre shows change?
New York, Boston and Chicago recently added new material to the second half of their shows. Please also keep in mind that all performances vary nightly because the audience changes nightly.
-
Will you add music from The Complex to the theatre shows?
Yes. Some of the album's music was used when the latest new material was added to the shows in New York, Boston and Chicago. The Berlin show also has music from The Complex including an amazing re-mix of Blue Man Group's version of "I Feel Love" during paper finale.
-
How long is a Blue Man Group performance?
The approximate running time for all Blue Man Group theatre shows is one hour and forty-five minutes without an intermission.
-
I have tickets in what is referred to as the "Poncho Section." Do I have to bring my own poncho?
Blue Man Group refers to the area closest to the stage as the "Poncho Section." Blue Man Group provides each person in this section with a poncho just in case some of the materials used on stage go into the audience.
-
I have heard that the theatre show can get a little messy. What is the appropriate dress for Blue Man Group?
The blue men do use a variety of materials on stage and at times those materials get into the audience. While it does not happen all the time, we do strongly suggest that you do not wear clothing that you consider nice or valuable. We encourage casual attire for the show. Jeans and sneakers are ideal. Suede is best left at home.
-
What age group is appropriate for the theatrical shows?
One of the great things about seeing Blue Man Group is that it appeals to all ages. Kids will enjoy the lights, color and spectacle. Adults enjoy the humor, social commentary and depth of the character. Even the hardened theatre critic finds a deeper message behind the fun and mess.
While the show appeals to a wide audience, it’s not recommended for children under five.
-
How long does it take a Blue Man to prepare before the show? What is the make-up the Blue Men put on their faces?
It takes a Blue Man approximately one hour to get in costume for the show. The Blue Men wear grease paint on their heads. It never dries. This effect allows the Blue Men to maintain that wet gooey look throughout the show.
-
What is the name of the song playing during the paper finale?
The name of the song used at the end of the show in New York, Boston, Chicago and Las Vegas is "Last Train to Trancentral," by KLF. It can be found on their album entitled, White Room . It is also available as a bonus track featured on the AUDIO DVD 5.1 Surround Sound Mix. The Berlin show ends in an amazing re-mix of Blue Man Group's version of "I Feel Love."
-
Is there a strobe light used in your theatre performance?
There are some portions of the show in which a strobe light is used, mainly in the final sequence. There are signs carefully marked with this information at each one of our theatres. Please take note of this, and proceed accordingly.
-

Blue Man Group opened at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin on May 9, 2004. It has always been the goal of Blue Man Group to give people all over the world a chance to experience the Blue Man Group work. Blue Man Group continues to discuss future sites for extended runs of theatrical productions in cities around the world and looks forward to a successful run in Berlin.
-
Will Blue Man Group go on tour?
Blue Man Group is not currently planning to go out with a touring version of the Blue Man Group theatrical productions currently running in New York, Boston, Chicago and Las Vegas. What Blue Man Group created last year was a brand new show, The Complex Rock Tour. The Complex Rock Tour was a state-of-the-art rock show that allowed Blue Man Group to play all new music from their new album, The Complex, while pushing the boundaries of the concert experience. The Complex Rock Tour ended in the fall of 2003. There are currently no plans for Blue Man Group to tour but please check back with blueman.com for the most up to date information.

Is BMG going to release a video or are there any videos for sale?
"Sing Along," a track from The Complex, featuring Dave Matthews on vocals, is Blue Man Group’s first music video. Although it is not available for sale separately, the "Sing Along" video is available on the enhanced copy of The Complex CD.
In our experience, we have found it difficult to capture the sights or sounds of the live Blue Man theatrical experience in a recorded format, whether it is audio, video or both. We spent years trying to re-invent the audio recording process in an attempt to represent our unique musical experience. Our first album, AUDIO, is the result. We were however successful in capturing Blue Man Group's rock experience which can be seen in our DVD, The Complex Rock Tour Live.
-
Can I purchase Spin Art that is created during the show?
Spin art is art is available for purchase at the merchandise counter of each theatre. Spin art is not sold through the blueman.com online store.
